Only a small fishing village a few years ago and the Hippie's 'El Dorado' in the late 60s, Matala has now developed into a modern holiday center providing hotel accomodation for a good number of visitors. In Matala there are a lot of possibilities to relax and to discover. There are three wonderful beaches: First there is Matala's central beach with Tavernas and lots of actvities. After climbing through the rocks you can reach the romantic and quite red beach with it's incredible redcoloured sand. 2 miles from the hotel -or 5 minutes by car-there is the third alternative: the impressive bay of the
kommos beach.10 miles of white sand and deep blue water and a marvellous view into the ida-mountains. In this area you will hardly find any buildings. It is a national preserved area and it was once part of the habour of phaistos. Phaistos is one of the centres of europe's first culture: the minoian culture. You can reach the palace of phaistos in about ten minutes by car. Another must-see in the nearer surrounding is the old capital of crete: Gortis. Gortis was in its time one of the biggest cities. It had about 200,000 inhabitants and was a force of cultural development in that time.
